Rock Bendway Weirs and Rock Bendway Vanes

These structures were utilized in the initial grant cycle and are proving effective.  The rock bendway weir and vane structures displace the high velocity and turbulent flow away from the threatened riverbank.  Both structures are pointed upstream.  The structures realign the flow by moving the maximum velocity thread to the end of the structures, thus halting the river migration.  Variable permeability allow the system to be tuned to site specific river velocity, cross section, and sediment characteristics.

Rock Bendway Weirs

Condition: 15′-20′ Raw bank prior to installation

Design:

  • Installed at 30 degree angle upstream
  • Spacing determined by Natural Resources District Engineer, average spacing is approximately 75-100 feet apart, depending on change in flow.

Cost: Approximately $3,000 to $6,000 per weir

Rock Bendway Vanes

Condition: 15′-20′ Raw bank prior to installation

Design:

  • Installed 20 to 30 degree angle upstream
  • Spacing determined by Natural Resources District Engineer, average spacing is approximately 50-75 feet apart, depending on change in flow.
  • Top of van has a slope between four and seven degrees.

Cost: Approximately $5,000 per vane
